Jodie Whittaker is soon set to take over the controls of the TARDIS from Peter Capaldi in the upcoming 11th season of Doctor Who will be the first for the upcoming Thirteenth Doctor and now we know who will be joining her along for the ride across space and time.
First up is Bradley Walsh, who will be reentering the world of Who after previously playing a villain in a 2008 episode of the spin-off series, The Sarah Jane Adventures. Walsh has a wide and varied career across the UK with notable roles on Coronation Street and hosting several game shows, including the UK’s Wheel of Fortune.
Walsh even talked about his love for the show itself.
I remember watching William Hartnell as the first Doctor. Black and white made it very scary for a youngster like myself.
Next up is Mandip Gill, who upon being cast in the new season said she was “over the moon” about joining such an “iconic” show.
Certain roles seem unattainable and this is one of those, so much so I didn’t believe it to be true for the first few weeks.
Gill has a wide background across film, stage, radio, and TV, where she is best known for playing Phoebe McQueen on Hollyoaks. She’s appeared in many other shows and has another drama coming up at the BBC soon.
Tosin Cole rounds out the batch of newest cast members with a resume that includes roles in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Cut, and like Gill, is a Hollyoaks alum too.
Cole said of the casting:
I’m grateful and excited to be a part of this journey with the team. I’m looking forward to jumping in this Doctor Who universe.
Now this being Doctor Who, information right now is being kept hush-hush, all that’s known when the series returns after its annual Christmas special is that it will consist of 10 episodes at its usual 50-minute length, with the premiere being an hour-long special to start things off for Whittaker and crew.
Of the new cast members, incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall said they are,
Three of Britain’s brightest talents. The new Doctor is going to need new friends.
Simple and right to it.
