Picture this: it’s a Wednesday, which means that it is new comic day. If you’re like some of the geeks I know, you probably have a pull box at your local comic book store to make your shopping faster. But have you ever thought of going to GameStop for your comic book needs?
GameStop is best known as being a provider of video games, consoles, and collectibles, but now they are looking to expand.
In a statement made to SYFY WIRE, they explained that expanding their offerings to include comics just made sense:
Comics are often a part of our promotional entertainment industry environment, including video games — we can learn from this tribal knowledge. We have partnered with Diamond to carry a small selection of comics in 40 stores utilizing their new spinner rack. The comics are mostly from Marvel and DC with a focus on key series and titles. This is just a small launch to bring comics to some of our collectibles stores as they fit with the current trend of Collectibles that are performing in the market. Should this prove successful, we may consider rolling out to additional stores in the future but plan to keep it limited to the spinner rack for the foreseeable future.”
We do not know yet where the 40 stores would be. Since I don’t live in a big city and since GameStop has over 7,000 locations, I will not be holding my breath that any of my local GameStops will be included in this trial run.
This is not the company’s first major change this year. In May CEO Michael Mauler stepped down after only a few months in the position for personal reasons. Executive chairman and director Daniel A. DeMatteo was announced as the company’s interim CEO following Mauler’s announced departure. We can only watch and see if GameStop selling comics will be successful or not.
Could you imagine GameStop as your new go-to store for comics? Will you try it if it’s in your area? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.
