While randomly browsing the internet, I came across a cosplay that made me actually squeal out loud. Nerdtastic Mel, a beautiful woman, was dressed to the T as my favorite anxiety-ridden toddler, Chucky Finster. I don’t know if I was more impressed by the hair or the fact that she did his little freckles.
Continuing to see what Nerdtastic Mel was all about, I fell in love with each picture I saw. Each cosplay was so full of ’90s nostalgia, I could almost feel the Nickelodeon slime in my hair.
I got a chance to chat with her, see what she’s up to, and what she’s got planned for the future. So read on for my exclusive interview with Nerdtastic Mel below!
Quinzel Lee: “Before we dive into the cosplay, I hear you are a gamer. What’s your console and what are you playing now?”
Nerdtastic Mel: “I am currently playing Ni No Kuni II for the PS4 and Monster Hunter Stories for the 3DS.”
QL: “All right, let’s start from the beginning. Tell me about how you first got into cosplay.”
NM: “Ahh yes a friend of mine told me about an anime convention. I decided to go catch it out. We decided to dress for con. I went as Serena from Pokemon. I just remember being so amazed by all the amazing cosplays. After the convention, I decided that cosplaying was going to be my new hobby.”
QL: “I see that you have a lot of ’90s nostalgic cosplays. I personally really loved your Chucky Finster cosplay. Can you tell me what was your favorite character or fad from the ’90s? Mine is probably a tie between those uncomfortable jelly shoes and scrunchies.”
NM: “I am a ’90s baby! I personally feel like the ’90s had the best cartoons. I plan on cosplaying all of my favorite cartoons. My list is very long! I am slowly but surely working through my ’90s cartoon cosplay. My favorite show is between the Rugrats, Hey Arnold, and Scooby Doo, Where Are You. My favorite character is Velma.”
QL: “If you could swap lives with any character that you have cosplayed in the past, who would it be and why?”
NM: “It would most definitely be Velma. She is so smart and goes on these amazing adventures.”
QL: “In your own words, tell me why you believe that it’s important that cosplay is inclusive?”
NM: “Cosplay is for everyone. It doesn’t matter what your gender, ethnicity, or size is. No one should ever feel left out or that they cannot cosplay a certain character because they don’t look like them. Cosplay is about dressing up like your favorite characters and having fun.”
QL: “Got any not-so-secret projects coming up that you want to tell us about?”
NM: “I am currently working on a Thumblina (sic) cosplay. I am hoping to have it done this month. I just finished shooting my Malon Cosplay from The Legend of Zelda. A side project I just started for my YouTube channel is a cosplay and cooking series. I kicked off the series with how to make Lon Lon milk from The Legend of Zelda while cosplaying as Malon.”
