After journeying to Italy, to the Caribbean sea, to Constantinople, Paris, London, and Egypt, Assassin’s Creed is finally taking us to Ancient Greece! In the trailer presented by Ubisoft at their E3 presentation, we got to see the amazing graphics and a bit of the gameplay and story that the new Assassin’s Creed will follow!
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey gives the player the choice to choose their main character, Alexios or Kassandra. Unlike Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, however, you can only play as one character rather than going back and forth. The good news is, the story remains the same for both characters!
The story of the character (whichever one you end up choosing) is described by Ubisoft as a Greek tragedy. Kassandra and Alexios are descendants of Leonidas. (For those of you who don’t know who Leonidas is, you can check out the 300 movie. It’s not a good reference since most of the movie is inaccurate by Greek history, but.. eh.). After defying a prophecy by the Delphi oracle (high priestess who knew the future of everything and everyone..) your character is thrown off a cliff and is presumed dead, but ultimately survives. The story continues seventeen years later, with the character becoming a sort of mercenary, if you will.
The trailer shown in E3, on June 11th, showed the story of Alexios as he began his journey. You can watch the trailer here:
But there’s more! While Asssassin’s Creed: Origins was just a little bit on the RPG side, Odyssey is taking it to the next level. The game now allows the players to choose their own destiny, through dialogues that impact the future of the gameplay!
As for the combat style of the game, many have characterized it as a complete copy of Origins. And while most of the combat was based upon Origins, there have been a couple of changes! Besides the fact that Ubisoft has created a larger customization combat system, they have added a couple of new moves and abilities! There’s the shield break, the (famous) Sparta kick, there’s even an ability that has the character use the spear of King Leonidas, that grants almost god-like abilities!
The system basically allows you to map every skill and move that you prefer. You can have a chain of skills and moves thrown to the enemy simply by having them in the order that you prefer, as well as… having enough XP to do so.
You can also change the stats of your weapons by using engravings, and ultimately choose how you’ll play the game. Will you be a Hunter, a Warrior, or an Assassin?
You can check out the Gameplay Walkthrough showed in E3 here:
Odyssey also brings back the naval system that we haven’t seen since… Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag? You’ll be able to recruit your crew, customize your ship, and get into naval fights. (Just like Black Flag but maybe a bit cooler.) Beware of the sharks!
Odyssey is also said to have one of the largest maps of Assassin’s Creed! There are a lot of islands for the player to explore…. and there’s also the mainland Greece.
If you decide to buy and play the game, know that you’ll not only meet the Oracle of Delphi, but you might also get to be friends with Sophocles, Pericles, Herodotus, Euripides or Darius. Since Assassin’s Creed has a tendency to bring historical figures into their games (like Leonardo Da Vinci – I LOVED that guy), it would be a bit disappointing to not see the ones from Ancient Greece!
The game is out on October 5th, 2018. Until then, I guess it’s time to play Ezio’s story all over again…
